WHO Sets 2030 Goal to Detect Emerging Health Threats Within 24 Hours

BERLIN | October 12, 2026 | Health Pana

The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a five-year strategy aimed at enabling every country to detect and understand emerging health threats within 24 hours of their appearance by 2030.

The strategy was announced through the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence during the World Health Summit in Berlin. It focuses on strengthening disease surveillance, genomic sequencing, data sharing and international cooperation.

The initiative builds on work involving 160 WHO Member States and partner organizations to improve the early detection and assessment of potential epidemic threats.

The strategy also promotes the responsible use of artificial intelligence to identify potential health risks from publicly available information, alongside scientific collaboration and improved digital public-health systems.

According to WHO, early detection is essential to helping countries respond before outbreaks develop into larger epidemics or spread internationally.

Achieving the 2030 goal will require sustained investment, trained public-health personnel, reliable surveillance systems and cooperation between governments and international partners.
