Rapid HIV Surge Tied to Drug Crisis in Island Nation

In Fiji, health authorities are confronting one of the world’s fastest-growing HIV outbreaks — not from traditional transmission routes but linked closely to rising methamphetamine (meth) use among young people. According to health officials, unsafe intravenous drug use has fueled an unprecedented surge in new HIV cases, with the majority reported in people aged 15–34. Efforts are now underway to combine addiction treatment, needle-exchange programs, and expanded access to HIV care to curb the dual crisis before it spreads deeper into vulnerable communities.
